What is a standing seam metal roof?
Standing seam metal roofs are pretty popular ones as owners prefer to install a metal roof that is safe and provides a modern look at the same time. The standing seam metal system is a concealed fastener metal panel system that consists of vertical legs, and a flat is between those legs.
The vertical legs raise the seam above the flat surface. One of the major reasons for a huge demand is the variety of choices and patterns for the customers. Besides the panel’s color, the customer can choose from panel length, width, profile, thickness, and much more.
What are the Different types of panel profiles?
The panel profile refers to the shape and pattern of the two panels which are joined together. What profile you should pick depends on-
- Type of roof you have
- How steep your roof is
- Environment your property surrounds
All these factors will help the architect to choose among the different panel types.
Panel profile type 1: snap-lock profile
In snap lock profiles, the panels are formed by rolling with specifically shaped edges. It has a male and female leg that snaps together without the requirement of hand or mechanical seeming during installation.
The snap-lock profile is attached to the roof deck using clips that are attached to the seam and fasten underneath the panel. This system requires less labor, as there is no mechanical seam required. They are cost-effective, as well. They are only installed on a roof pitch of 3/12 or above.
Panel profile type 2: mechanical lock profiles
In these panels are also rolled with specifically shaped edges, but here the edges are bent with a hand or mechanical seamer. There are two different forms of mechanical seams- single lock 90-degree seam and double lock 180-degree seams.
- Single lock 90-degree seam- it refers to only one-fold of the seam. It performs well in mild environments. They require less labor and can be easily replaced if damaged.
- Double lock 180-degree seam- they feature two-fold of the seam. Their performance is better, and the chance of panels to be unseamed is rare. They are a good choice for cold areas where snow freezing could cause expansion and contraction. They are more labor-intensive and harder to replace.
Panel profile type 3: batten panel profiles
In this type of roofing system, the two-panel legs are roll-formed and then butted up next to one another. From there, a metal cap goes into the legs to create a seam. Two types of batten panel profiles are-
Tee seam- they are seamed mechanically, which means they will do well in harsh climatic conditions. It can work effectively in steep and low slope applications. Tee seam batten panels are more weathertight and have pre-installed sealant in the cap.
Snap cap- they are not seamed mechanically. They are mostly used in curved roofing applications. The performance of snap caps is dependent on their installation. These systems are used more for aesthetics as compared to function.
Panel profile type 3: nail flanges/ fastener flanges profile
It is very much similar to the snap-lock type panel profile. But here, instead of choosing a clip to attach the panel to the roof deck, it is fastened down the deck through the male leg of the metal panel. Once fasteners are in place, one leg snaps over the second, and the fastener gets concealed.
Due to fewer accessories required for installation, it seems to be the cheapest option and is best suited for residential applications. But these systems cannot go on low slope applications and follow the imperfections of a roof deck.
Some basic description of the panel sizes-
Panel widths: the width of the panel varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. But generally, it ranges from 12’’to 18″ inches in width, 16″ inches being the most common.
Seam heights: they can also be referred to as rib heights. They are equally important as the panel width.
Mostly, standing seam metal roofs have seam height ranging from 1’’to 3″. However, 1 ½” to 2″ is the most common choice for the panels’ thicknesses: the standing seam metal panels typically have thickness somewhere between 22 to 26 gauges. The most common steel panels have a thickness of 24 gauges.
What are the advantages of a standing seam metal roof?
- No exposed fasteners
- Allow the thermal movement
- Long life
- Sleek, consistent, and modern look
- Energy efficient
